The Antique Phonograph Periodical in Full-Color

As its membership "spans the entire globe", the former California Antique Phonograph Society changed its name to The Antique Phonograph Society and, from the current issue, publishes its quarterly journal, renamed The Antique Phonograph in full-color. I just got my copy and read every single word.

My personal favorite is George Paul's and Gregg Cline's article about Zonophone Talking Machines: The National Gramophone Corporation Years, 1899-1901 picturing and describing the entire manufacturing program at the time (Type A, B, C, D and Concert Grand). I have never known the differences in early Zonophone bedplates and cranks, until I read this most informative article. In regard to workmanship of Zonophones, the authors put the reputation of the National Gramophone Corporation in its true light, but also put the Eldridge Johnson/Berliner Gramophone Co. alliance in its place.

I remember some discussion about the society and ways to increase its membership. do you know whether there was any consideration given to establishing some sort of connection or collaboration with this forum, particularly considering the volume of regular traffic it receives?

I just received my copy of The Antique Phonograph and it is outstanding. All photos are in color and the articles are very informative. I would encourage everyone to view the publication online. Membership is only $25 and a bargain. I welcome the name change as the club in much more than a California club. I would like to thank the club officers and editor, Rene Rondeau, for a great publication. Jerry Blais

There has been no discussion as yet of a formal connection/collaboration with this forum, but if the owner/moderators were willing, I'm sure the APS board would be interested in exploring it. I for one think it's a good idea.

Thanks, Starkton and Jerry, for your kind comments on the first full-color issue of The Antique Phonograph. I think forum members will see that some of their thoughts have been put into action. There will be more to come in 2012.

We'd be interested in more feedback from members of the Forum!

Best to all,

George P.

Thanks for posting this link! I read the downloadable December 2011 Edition of the magazine and it really was fascinating and looks like a truly fine quality magazine. I plan on joining in January. I just hope they can still send me this issue as well. Thanks Again!!!

I will add a second that the magazine is excellent and that the $25 annual membership is money well spent if you love old phonographs and their history.

As someone who goes all the way back to the founding of CAPS, I shed a brief tear for the passing of that era and welcome the new organization with enthusiasm. I had to chuckle when I saw that Dan Reed of Victorville is 'President Emeritus'. In the first few years, we would have said that position was held by John Woodward. That is pretty much an inside joke!
