Who made the first 12" disc record, was it Victor and when was the first ones sold?

Victor 12 inch "Deluxe" records first came out in October 1903.

I don't know who is the first, but I believe it possible the Gramophone (and Typewriter) Co. had 12 inch discs out ahead of Victor. They're right on the same timeline.

Zonophone 12 inch discs were out in September 1903, but they were already Victor property anyway, by then.

I always thought it was Odeon, but maybe they released the first double sided discs ??

They have that distinction, their double sided discs were on the market around 1904. Before they were enjoined to stop making them, for some reason.

Mattia Battistini's In questa suoio (G & T disc from 1902) runs to nearly 4 minutes and carries a different catalog number (with a 54 prefix rather than 52) so I think it likely that it was a 12 inch record.In his discography the 54 prefix doesn't pick up again until he resumed recording in 1906. With 52 prefix records still to follow it.

A few of the Francesco Tamagno records of 03-04 were 12 inchers, too.

I think I've read somewhere that Charles Santley is one of the first person who made the first 12 inch records.

Francesco Tamagno was the first who recorded 12 inch discs in his home in Ospedaletti, Italy, February 1903.

Charles Santley only recorded on 8 June 1903.

A G&T catalogue number with a 54 prefix merely indicates that it is a duet in the Italian language. Battistini and the mezzo-soprano Tilde Carotini recorded La Favorita: In questo suolo on a 10 inch disc (G&T 54034).

That's good to know, I hadn't made that distinction. Guess it's Tamagno then (for now.)

The thread question is an interesting one that I've frankly never considered before.
