You can examine the rivets, if they are angled you can tell which way to put the spring. Or just keep putting them back one way then the other until it's right.

I thought that you would have got more help with this one.
I have only limited experenice with fitting springs but last year I had a mission of a job with just a two spring motor!
There seems to be different ways for different motors.
Have you had any luck.

Deb,
Post a photo of the motor, with the spring barrels arranged as they would be installed in the motor. Also, some detail of the center winding shaft. If I see enough detail I can tell how they go.

Another way might be to examine the spring barrels. An inch or so to either side of the spring rivet. Ther might be an impression in the grease or some scratches from where the springs were originally inserted. This would tell you to which side of the rivet the end of the spring set.
It's a long shot but hey, it's worth a look. I've only replaced springs once but noticed some old residue where the last lap of the springs laid. You might only see it only around one spring rivet but that would tell you some about the spring next to it too maybe.
Then again, if you've already cleaned your barrels or they were full of newer grease this probably won't work.
