Has anyone heard of the Jedlicka record company? I went to an antique shop and picked up a brown wax cylinder that is stamped on the thick end Jedlicka Record, a deep groove, high speed (144 approx) brown wax record, it is noisy at the left and gets quieter at the right end,. It appears this record company used Edison blanks as it has a double start spiral indicating an Edison blank. It has a trade mark that looks kind of like saturn between Jedlika and Record, it is a vocal and piano solo, I can't make the announcement out. I will post a picture soon, It kind of reminds me of the Leeds Catlin stamp.

I suspect this was probably made around 1900 or 1901, it has the characteristic double spiral of an Edison Blank, the recording is loud, and seems to be 144 rpm, and from the name, could be from another country.

That's quite an interesting title end on a brown wax. It reminds me somehow of some earlier Edison-Bell cylinders. I'd agree absolutely with your dating guess, all these hints lead clearly to 1900/01.
If you could find the exact rpm one could probably make another guess where it probably came from. Some British cylinders are recorded at 140 instead of 144rpm.

There is also another possibility, that even the brand name Jedlicka Record was just put on a pre-recorded Edison brown wax. Any snippet out of the announcement could mean a load of help.

The word origin seems to be Czech for the fir tree...

A while back an empty Jedlicka cylinder box from NY City was offered, quite likely a product of the Czech community in the US. Unfortunately I didn't keep data and photos.

Jedlicka music was up on 72nd St. between 2 nd and 3rd avenue back in the 'teens. They were Edison and Victor dealers, and had to offer their Bohemian custom the decidely limited catalogues of those two firms. victor made a real attempt at the Bohemian market around 1910 with a a number of issues by Belenec and Bartos, but aside from a few Bohemian VodVil discs the Bohemian catalog was largely made up of Pochods and Valciks played by the Victor studio band, all the while Columbia was pioneering a new market with their Nationality series, first on brown and later on the famous Green label series. To better service their market, Jedlicka imported considerable numbers of European pressings, generally Lindstrom affilliated labels.

After the War, Jedlicka became one of the key dealers for the new OkeH/Odeon foreign series.

Jedlička, pronounced like "yedlichka", means spruce tree in Czech.

Thank you , at least were getting somewhere with it, a Czech label, based in New York, would explain the Edison blank used. Is much known about them in the brown wax days then? And a cylinder box! that is very interesting, this one came in a blue Columbia box, not original to the record. Does it have any value? I will never shave it, as the original recording is intact enough. I think it is horrible to shave any original brown wax, I wonder if there is more than 10,000 brown wax records left? I was under the impression that between Edison and Columbia, maybe 4000,000 brown wax records were produced, to about 1900 and with how sensitive they are to the elements, that knocks down the numbers fast.
