in color. Makes it seem more "real".

were these from the 1906 earthquake, i think they say Enrico Caruso was in San Francisco during the quake. Interesting pics.

Yes, 1906.

I've never seen those before and they're very interesting. The entire Metropolitan Opera Company was in San Francisco the night of the quake. There is the story that Pol Plancon"s dyed beard ended up looking quite green after a few days without a touch up.

Tip -- To view the slides in 3-D:

--Click on an image to open it full size.
--Flatten your hand and hold it along the bridge of your nose, so it divides your field of vision.
--Bring your hand to the center divider of the two images.
--Relax your eyes, softly focusing on the images and gradually pull back from the screen.

It may take two or three tries, but eventually the two photos will merge into a single 3-D image.

Alternatively, you can print out the paired images, mount them on a stiff card, and view them through a stereopticon (stereoscope). I was fortunate enough to inherit one (well, actually, it belonged to my wife's grandparents, but she lets me use it!).

In the 2nd set of pics, You can see a Troley car and some people appear to be Green. Weird..

The process consisted of taking three separate photographs on b/w film with red, blue and green filters. Judging by the oddly-colored pedestrians, the three photos were not taken at the same instant, so that anything that moved was recorded in a different position on the three negatives. The link provided in a previous post has a nice description of the very complicated process.

One often sees these "ghost" images in photos from the early periods, as photographic emulsions were very slow compared with later materials, and could not stop motion.
