This is coming up at a local auction. Looks like either a conversion or a reproduction. Just wondering what you guys think about it.

Thanks for your input.

Their was a thread about these a few months ago. They are reproductions from the 80's I believe, but they do have some value.

Ya 1980's sounds about right because of the tape deck. I suppose you could switch that out for an iPod dock :D

It's interesting, but I won't be bidding on it.

I have seen one of these before, but I don't think that I'd want one infecting my collection..lol...

I think the horn can actually be salvaged and used on a genuine cylinder player, but as you probably know, it's only cosmetic here, the reproduction machine has a separate speaker on the side of the case - otherwise, it would be far more interesting (if it sent the contemporary sound - from radio, tapes, etc. - through the horn).

It should go as an inexpensive novelty or curiosity. I hope you don't spend much ($50 or less) on it. My opinion only. Jerry B.

Why bother with plastic when you can have the real thing? :D

I agree. I don't plan on bidding on it now, just wanted your thoughts on it. Although if the the horn is usable on genuine machines then it could be worth a bit to someone.

I'd only want it for a homemade conversion to electrical cylinder playback / transport.

Not possible with that hunk, though. I think it's all molded plastic.
