It looks almost like a Victrola No. 2 with a long throat if there was such a thing.
Anyone know what this is supposed to go on?

The front and stylus bar looks exactly like a hmv no4 but the back doesn't, I think it was either part home made or just 2 reproducers put together, the later no4s had bad pot metal issues so maybes someone replaced the back with a longthroat from another reproducer

It's a Paillard soundbox, based on the Victor/HMV No.4, except the needle bar pivots are reversed (maybe to get past Victors design patent?), and the diaphragm is also larger than the No.4.
IMO it's the only mass produced mica diaphragmmed box that out performs the No.4. They're brilliant!
I've got a few of them with various names on them, but they're all designed to fit a standard size Victor tonearm. This one is designed to push into the tonearm, which I've sometimes heard Americans call a European fitting. Paillard used this type of arm a lot up until the late 20s.

That's certainly set up for the "European Fitting" that some makes used into the 30's. It could be a modified #4 or a Swiss copy. What ever it is I wish I had it because I think it would fit my Parlophone Portable.

Gramophoneshane- thanks for the excellent pictures that explain more than I could with a flood of words.

It actually looks exactly like an unbranded Goldring Juwel Electro. They still make high-end turntable cartridges today.

Yep, your Goldring was made by Paillard. They put anyones brand name on them that paid for the privilege.
Below is the same soundbox, one branded "Portuna Electric", and the other "Victor Palings Patent" (from an Aussie Palings music store Victor)
