And I once argued with an audio engineer that in fact they did use more than one horn in an acoustic session. I needed this pic to clinch it!

This is very late in the acoustic era- possibly they might have had valves to reduce the input of selected horns when needed. I've got a record of selections from The Nutcracker from one of these sessions- it's very very clear.

While the pictures are intriguing, one really wonders what is really behind that suspicious curtain. I did a little a research of my own and found out..... You can see where the horns come through
