A friend is trying to complete an early Victor School machine. It's the early model, basically square, without provision for storing the horn under the cabinet. Can someone tell me what's the correct motor for this machine. A photo would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jerry Blais - [email protected]

I've been meaning to check the Victor Data book since I first saw this post...but off the top of my head, I believe the school house used the same motor as the VV-X. I don't recall what year they modified the shelf for storing the horn...(it was either the second or third version). Would it be possible to get a serial number, just to confirm?

Without resorting to the book (I promise to check tonight), I believe the motor looked like this one (if someone knows otherwise, or has their copy of the Data book handy, please chime in)..

FWIW, that appears to be the same motor as pictured in my reproduction pages of the "Catalog of Repair Parts for Victor XXV (Type M) with Spiral Drive Motor," dated August 1st, 1913. It's a two-spring motor with separate barrels for each spring, similar to the one in my XI (model G, 1917). HTH

Finally checked the Victor Data Book. If you have the stationary lower shelf, without the horn storage (should also have a piano hinge rather than the removable lid, and the Victor rather than Victrola decal), than that is the motor you're looking for. Your machines would ahve been the first production year, from march 1913 to Aug 1914, with a serial number less than 2503. The motor is a double 1.25" spring, spiral drive, Quad cut, and took a 5/16 female crank (and had a "Murray" style regulator, as seen above).
