I skimmed through it today. From what I can tell, Henry Seymour contributed quite a bit. The sections profiling his diaphragms are especially interesting--years ahead of what the major mfgs. were doing at the time.

Thank you for sharing the link to the Gramophone book. I especially find the Seymour information interesting as I have a rare Seymour floating reproducer/diaphragm for an Edison Gem. The diaphragm is made of celluloid.

That book is much easier to view as a downloaded .PDF file, than trying to view it online. While viewing the book online, if you click on a cog-shaped icon, you will then see a pop-up menu option to download the book either as plain text or as a .PDF file.

Is there anyone kind enough to post the PDF file of this? For some crazy reason I can't read this online!
(I'm located in Seoul, South Korea, of course)

It is a shame that the books "Gramophones Accoustic and Radio, The Official handbook of the Gramophone" (1929) and "Modern Gramophones and electrical reproducers" (1932?) are not available on Google Books. Copies of these were sold for £79.50 and £64.60 respectively on eBay UK last week.

They were both written by gentlemen involved with The Gramophone Magazine (Wilson, Mackenzie, etc) and reportedly contained information about EMG, Expert, Bond Cascade, and HMV Re-entrant machines.

I wonder if anyone we know bought them?

I'm not able to answer the question, but I know that EMGCR who has posted to this forum in the recent past is among those who would have read the second book mentioned. I'd imagine he should be in a position to explain something of it but may not be around these days. I've seen the second book myself and took some notes from it but unfortunately I have a mind that seems to have been inoculated against understanding technical matters and so can't elaborate. Certainly the book shows that Percy Wilson, as well as having a brilliant mind, was also a gifted writer. It's co-authored by G.W. Webb who was the Chairman of the Gramophone Expert Committee - the group who reported on the various gramophones etc. over the years.
To give a flavour of the book here are some of the chapter headings I have: Chap.1 Sounds and Sound Waves; Chap.2 Records and Recording Systems; Chap.3 Reproducing Systems; Chap.4 Sound-Boxes; Chap.5 Horns (function of the horn - properties required of a horn - contour of a horn - the exponential or logarithmic horn - another approximation - size of mouth opening - non-circular section - folded horns - bifurcated horns - material of horns)
And it continues for eleven chapters.
Apologies if this should be in a different thread. I'm not at all a forum person and don't fully understand the protocol.
