I just acquired a victor gooseneck tone arm absolutely covered in patina, and its not a nice looking patina either . So the question is, how do i remove it?
Thanks!

Patina as in a rust bucket, or just the plating worn?

My husband shines all his exhaust parts and stuff with Mother's metal polish. I have been wondering if it would work on my tone arms

More that the metal has tarnished. It is covered with greenish spots, as well as the rim of the sound box

Are you talking gold plated or nickel plated? It makes a big difference. Jerry

More that the metal has tarnished. It is covered with green spots all over the tone arm, as well as the metal rim of the sound box. Its funny because this only occurs on the plated metal. The unplated metal is a "rust bucket"

It was nickel plated.

If it's that bad you are going to have to take it down to bare metal and start again. If it's nothing unusual you might wand to just get another arm- it could be cheaper than the cleaning and replating process.

My experience is limited, but I have read a lot of threads on this forum. I have cleaned up 5 or 6 machines in the last year. MAAS Cream works very well, as does 0000 steel wool. Just don't be overly aggressive and remove the plating. Brasso turned out to be too harsh and I won't be using that again.

Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish is what I use on everything, it works great. OrthoSean turned me onto it years ago. You can find it in any auto parts store that carries polish and cleaners.
And despite the fact that it says not to use it on chrome, it's the best chrome polish I've ever seen. As a collector of antique cars and kitchen appliances, I have a lot of chrome to polish.
