It’s a wonder they produced the grey/ beige 102 then discontinued it as it wasn’t so popular. You’d have thought as the 101 version is equally as rare it was presumably because it wasn’t a good seller.

It's worth remembering that both the grey and BROWN 101s were introduced quite late into the production run when the 101 was already out of date and not really able to compete with better models from other makers and even a company as behind as HMV was at this juncture was already looking into a replacement model.
There are quite a lot of surviving chocolate brown and grey 101s for an unpopular model!

I seriously doubt he knows. Why else wouldn't he state what it is in the listing, especially as finding a buyer has proven a challenge? If he knows, he's employing the strangest ever marketing strategy I've seen.

Just to clear some confusion in this thread, there was a grey crocodile cloth 101 with a grey horn and grey platter felt. It wasn't light brown but a lot of surviving examples have turned a horrid patchy nicotine colour with age! You only need to check the horn and turntable to see if it's grey. Notwithstanding this, the brown crocodile version is a deep tan colour with different patterning!
Both of the above were discontinued after a few years when the plain grey version replaced the grey crocodile and the chocolate brown (same as 102) replaced the tan crocodile version. The "antique brown" was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it short-lived replacement for the crocodile version just before the chocolate brown version appeared. The chocolate is more "milk chocolate" than "dark chocolate", before somebody asks!

Maybe they weren’t so unpopular, just less popular than the other colours.Steve wrote: ↑Sun Oct 29, 2023 8:17 pmIt's worth remembering that both the grey and BROWN 101s were introduced quite late into the production run when the 101 was already out of date and not really able to compete with better models from other makers and even a company as behind as HMV was at this juncture was already looking into a replacement model.

I always thought the colour range of the 101 and 102 was large by comparison to other makers. Although Columbia produced other colours too, they come up a lot less than HMV coloured models.

If the Brown and Grey 102's had been good sellers, they would not have been discontinued as early as 1934.
The Red Leather De Luxe 102 was also discontinued at about that time. It was simply too expensive.
These three 102'a are all rarer than their 101 predecessors, and their current prices (if you can find them) reflect this.
