Brown or Grey HMV 101 ?

Post by poodling around »

I get confused as I think I have read that over time grey HMV 101's turn brown and brown HMV 101's turn grey ?

So, is this brown or grey and is it rare I wonder ?

The "brown or grey" confusion applies mainly to the "crocodile skin" models. Unless you can get the two versions side by side, the difference is difficult to see. However, two things make the difference obvious. The grey one has a light beige turntable mat, and more importantly, the internal horn is painted a definite grey, whereas on the brown model both the mat and the horn are dark brown.

Fantastic !

Thanks very much indeed Teak.

I haven't seen a clear photograph of this (apparently rare) colour before so I at last know what it looks like.

Thanks again for confirming.

Very interesting indeed Barry.

With your information I am now all the wiser and know exactly what to 'look out for' in the future.

What seem to be rare Dark Blue and Grey HMV 101's are no longer a mystery !

Keep a lookout for the very rare "antique" brown 101. It has a distinctive pattern to the leathercloth rather than the plain brown of the usual 101.

Sounds intriguing ! Thanks Barry.

I really do like HMV 101's. So well constructed and great sound.

Our friend "jakescore1" has one for sale on Ebay currently. Its been on before and apparently "sold" so heaven knows why he's still trying to sell it?

He clearly doesn't know what it is as the price is quite low for such an amazing rarity!

Can't find a listing for it, nor is it in his "other items for sale"

He knows! Quite where he finds some of the stuff that’s for sale is a mystery.
