I concur with your analysis of the Hi-End market. I was refereeing to most modern sound systems not quite the very best hi-end stuff. Even the Stereosuite in 1960's was not the very best. A class B amp and perhaps the mot popular turntable of it's time, selling up to 65,000 units. The Technics 1200 having sold 3 million + so far and being the norm is the kind of thing I was referring to and also comparing to.
I'm sure with the revival in Vinyl there will still be improvements. About 10 years ago I heard a vinyl laser reader that was hand made by a Japanese friend. It's biggest problem was the noise and use of so many filters that at the end it lost the plot. With a mint condition vinyl and no filters it was mind blowing even with the noise. 10 years on it must have improved. But at it's best it was really only useful for playing unheard broken records and cylinders. By the way, his favorite deck was the grease bearing Garrard 301. The plinth made the biggest improvement...6 inches of solid granite and the arm mounted on it's own separate granite block. The rest of his system must have been valued at £50,000+
Next time I have a spare £20,000, I'll consider buying one of those decks. The wife would kill me
