I feel the need to issue a friendly reminder that uncivil discourse will not be tolerated here.

Thank you, HMV. I don't want to see us become so critical of each other that we can't share a potential opportunity for someone.HisMastersVoice wrote:I feel the need to issue a friendly reminder that uncivil discourse will not be tolerated here.

Re: NICE Oak C250 (McFarland) Madison WI CL $250
Well, I just thought that since Fran was
so thoughtful to post this Craigslist Alert
about this C-250 machine, and since I'm
a couple of hundred miles away from it, that
I'd share a live account of my dealings with the seller, as they unfold.
So, I did that. I posted some of the stuff
about it. I also wandered off into some
(rather humorous in my opinion) speculation
as to some possibilities of the final outcome,
given some of the information that I received
along the way. Some of that was just plain
silly. I agree. It was. Maybe even kind
of stupid, but I said it, and I own it.
Now then....there have also been hints
dropped by a few of our members here such
as someone being "an aweful cheapskate", or
to quote Peter that someone made an
"Ill conceived $25 squeeze".
Gentlemen, gentlemen!! Please.
Can't a fellow negotiate with a seller and
tell you folks about it without being judged?
I stand by my asking the seller to drop the
price from $250 since the machine can't run
right now, to show itself off. Doesn't matter
what the reason is, the fact is it does not
run, and cannot run presently, that in
my mind makes a slight price drop completely
appropriate. Especially since this little
detail about not running was mysteriously not
mentioned up-front, in the add!!
And, $25 is significant. It was just last summer, that I bought a whole, restorable
Dictaphone shaving machine for $25, which is
now working fine and being used.
If you go back and read this whole thread, you
will see that I am not alone in this line
of thinking that things got kind
of hosed-up when the seller introduced
the "3rd Party" Some agree. Some do not.
Some think that price negotiation is being
"cheap", some do not.
I've been at this now for well over 40 years.
I've seen deals go through, deals fall through, I've been called nasty names, I've
helped people, people have helped me.
But, in the end, call it what you will,
a person spends what they alone feel something
is worth, to them. Ben Franklin said:

Quick Question for the experts
What would you guys think if there's a
Craigslist add for a nice DD machine, which
shows a picture with the lid open, and there
is a key laid right there on the front?
Then later on you are told that the key pictured is not for the machine, and that
they don't have the key for the machine, and
it's not part of the deal.
What would you think of this?

A key would not make or break a deal like that for me if you're still referring to the same oak C250.

that should warrant at least a $25 discount.

So you were at the show right? If so, being that close, why didn't you run on up to McFarland and look at the machine yourself?

Especially since it truly isn't the correct key to this machine. A generic key like that can be had for around $3 at any antique shop or even eBay. It would not away my decision one way or the other.OrthoSean wrote:A key would not make or break a deal like that for me if you're still referring to the same oak C250.

Looks like a nice example. Just go grab it. If I were the seller, I'd not let it go for that price.
If you are interested in this type of machine, don't worry about a missing key or the potential need for a spring replacement. Both are easily dealt with. On the other hand, if it has cabinet damage, that's much more difficult to fix and it will always look restored.
