FOR SALE: Victor Deluxe Record Sousa - $20 *SOLD*

Post by JohnM »

The first Victor 12" discs were named 'Deluxe Records'. This is 31095 'Light Cavalry Overture' (aka, the Lone Ranger theme) by Sousa's Band. VG $20

Actually, the "Lone Ranger Theme" is Rossini's William Tell Overture. But the Light Cavalry is a comparable chestnut...

A bit off-topic, but here's a great musical trivia question: What instrument plays the first note in the William Tell Overture?

(I guarantee about 99 percent of those asked will get it wrong). ;)

Depends on where you start it. The Lone Ranger theme, with the trumpet call, comes deep into the overture, at the beginning of the so-called "Storm Scene." But the actual beginning of the overture proper starts with a big 'cello solo.

Comes with the territory. As often as I've heard it, and played it in the orchestra, I had to consult my LP recording (von Karajan and the Berlin Phil.) to refresh my memory!
