This conversation between my three year old grand-daughter and my son put things into perspective for me :

"Grandad's got three cars."

"That's right."

"Grandad doesn't need three cars. There's only him and Grannie."

It hardly seemed the right time to tell the child that Grandad has more than 20 gramophones, over 1000 records and is still collecting.

Out of the mouths of babes......

Yes, I am a disciplined collector. Space, budget, and other limitations are the factors. My small collection of eight machines and a few hundred records is sufficient and enjoyable. When I do see a phonograph or group of records for sale, I ask myself what currently owned phonograph would it replace?
Which records would I want to trade or sell?

Reading about the adventures of other collectors is enjoyable as is corresponding with them.

My wife collects flamingo stuff, and being the curious sort she has gone to some length to learn about the birds as they live in the wild. One fact that she uncovered convinced me that all collectors should adopt the flamingo as their official avian mascot:

Its eye is bigger than its brain.

I must be a disciplined collector: there still aren't any phonos in my bathroom ! Every other room, kitchen, front & back stair-halls, cellar, attic, and even the car (no room for those yet) but not in the bathroom. This brings a question to mind: what WOULD be an appropriate type of machine for a bathroom? Hmm. It should have a crank handle long enough to hold a roll of paper, for starters.
