I sold the one I had and am positive it never had gold feet. Were there any with this color option?

Another interesting thing is I am sure this exact same machine on LiveAuctions in Roanoke AL a few years ago.

I was at that auction in Roanoke when that over restored 8-9 sold. I don't recall the price it sold for but I do recall that itvwasnt cheap and we were told that the person it was bought for liked their machines over the top and over restored. A bit much for my taste.

The current ebay seller is a friend of mine. He says this is not from the Roanoke auction. Also says there were traces of gold paint on the feet of the one he's offering. As stated in the listing there's been some paint touchup on this example.

I remember the one from the auction in Roanoke, but it has been several years ago and I personally can't say that this one might be it or not.

I notice that the picture of the example 8-9 on the Victor-Victrola website does not appear to have painted feet. The illustration (#5-35) in Timothy & George's Discovering Antique Phonographs shows a MUCH more subtle painted treatment in line with what I would have expected from Victor. As someone said, the one sold on eBay was way overdone IMHO.

I just took a good close look at my 8-9 which is a rather above average, non-messed with original, and while it does have some gold painting on the feet, its very subtle as Clay suggests. It's really more of a highlight in a couple small areas at the top and bottom of each foot. The middle areas of each foot are finished oak and since the highlights are in the same place on each foot, I'd think it's safe to say that each entire foot was not completely gold with red inside (mine does have the red inside, though).

My 8-9 has hints of red and gold on the feet. I don't know what the machines looked like when new, but it's my opinion that the general appearance was meant to be somewhat distressed rather than pristine.

Why is that? The early examples of this model used felt, later production used leather or leatherette. Late machines also used a gold painted finish on the internal metal parts.
