1) Serial number (found on top): 75259
2) Is serial number stamped in a plate, or a raised boss? stamped
3) If stamped in a plate, what’s the last patent date? Jan 30, 1906
4) Does straight edge (where front of reproducer carriage rides) have 2 screws? none
5) Does the upper casting have lugs for Class M pulley wheels? no
6) Which secures the endgate; a ball catch, or a locking lug? no endgate
7) Does carriage hold the reproducer with nickeled clips, or a single screw at 2:00 position? single screw
8) Motor number (found stamped on front of motor frame): 63597
9) Are the motor gears solid or spoked? solid
10) If there’s a plate below the mandrel, what exactly does it say? none
11) Which does the cabinet have; a drawer, a banner decal, or an “Edison” script decal? script
12) Are there any dated material with it? Invoices? Packing slips? Writing inside the lid? none

My 5 cents:

First one - Edison Spring Motor with an light-oak case, lid missing.
1. Ser # 26717.
2. The Serial # is on a raised boss.
3. There is a plate in front of a mandrel. The last date on this tag is May 31 1898.
4. Two screws.
5. It has a Class M lugs, and 'Edison Phonograph Works' on ID tag.
6. Ball catch.
7. Bettini Attachment (1899 model).
8. Motor number # 9725.
9. 31 May 1898.
10. The motor has a solid gears.
11. It has a drawer.
12. Nothing.

Second one - later Edison Spring Motor with an dark oak case.
1. Serial # 28993.
2. The serial number is on two places: on a the nickel ID tag, and on a top starting edge.
3. The last date is May 31 1898.
4. none.
5. These are no Class M lugs.
6. Ball catch.
7. Bettini Attachment (1900 model)
8. Motor number # 11819.
9. No plate.
10. The motor has a solid gears.
11. It has a drawer.
12. Nothing.

1) Is the nickeled plate in front of the mandrel the only plate on the machine?

2) Does this plate in front of the mandrel carry the May 31, 1898 date?

3) You mention an "ID tag." Is that tag mounted on the front of the upper casting?

Yes, nickel plate on Bedplate, and 'Thomas A. Edison' signature.

USA. - May 8 1886, July 31 1888, Nov. 27 1888, Feb. 5 1889, Apr. 2 1889, Nov. 27 1889, June 17 1890, Mar. 24 1891, Apr. 21 1891, June 9 1891, Dec. 29 1891, Oct. 18 1892, June 20 1893, Jan. 23 1894, May 31 1898, For use only in The United States and Canada"

Yes, on the front of the upper casting. Text: "Manufactured by Edison Phonograph Works, Orange N.J. for use only in The United States of America and The Dominion of Canada", and 'Thomas A. Edison' signature. It is possible that the upper casting was removed from the old Electric machine, and later mounted on the new case with the spring motor. Because the gilded decoration on the top 'Leaves of Grass' as in the early machines, but gilt pattern on the bedplate is different, like 'New Style Cabinet' machines.
