WANTED Nautical and Sailor Songs On Disk Or Cylinder

Post by Phonofreak »

I started a thread in the music section on the Forum about Popeye The Sailor Man. I'm always looking for records with a nautical theme or the Navy, or Sailors. I'm former Navy and always had a soft spot for these types of records. I have a pretty good collection, but always on the prowl for more.

When my son joined the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines I developed an interest in military music. The band had first recorded for Edison in London as long ago as 1893, but they did not record commercially until 1936.

Most of their 78rpm issues on HMV were recorded by the Plymouth Band, as the Plymouth Band Room had the best acoustics. The Portsmouth Band and the orchestra are usually found on UK Columbia.

It is possible that some of these records were brought into the USA after WW2 by returning GI's. They are well worth buying, but of course I am biased.

Roger.

Here is a nautical record that I would like to find in better condition than what you hear at the link below. "He Was A Sailor" by Collins & Harlan - Columbia disk, 1903? The tune is also incorporated into a band recording called "Bedelia" on the early Climax label.

Funny lyrics, as much as I can make out.

[announcement]
"Comic Duet
'He Was A Sailor'
by Collins & Harlan
Columbia Record"

---------------------

Bill Perkins was a sailor boy, a sailor of renown.
From morn 'til night his one delight was sailing 'round the town.
If you should go to buy a drink and William was in view,
It's safe to bet this sailor boy would sail in after you.

He was a sailor, I'm sure you will agree,
Though he never sailed upon a ship that sailed upon the sea.
He was a sailor, he knew the ropes at that,
I know he was a sailor for he wore a sailor hat.

[vocal drum imitation]
Brrrr rum bump bump! brrrr rum bump bump!

Bill Perkins was a sailor lad, he knew his little book.
His arms are full of freckles and he had a dandy hook.
He had a ship upon his chest and men that do despair,
And all the girls that used to rave about his wavy hair.

He was a sailor, a sailor true and tried,
And every morning early he would sail on with the tide.
He was a sailor, who never ventured far,
He used to pilot schooners while they sailed across the bar.

Brrrr rum bump bump! brrrr rum bump bump!

Bill Perkins was a sailor boy, a sailor with a past.
He proved he was a sailor, for he wore his pants half mast.
Upon the briny open sea, he never had a ride,
And the only water that he ever saw was on the side.

He was a sailor, his bills he wouldn't pay,
He'd board with you a month or two and quickly sail away.
He was a sailor, with a sailor's pedigree,
But the only barque he ever saw was on a cherry tree.

Brrrr rum bump bump! brrrr rum bump bump!

Bill Perkins was a sailor lad, with me you must agree.
One day while walking down the street, he sailed right into me.
He always paid for lobsters when he went out on a lark,
And every one that knew him said that William was a shark.

He was a sailor, and he was not in pain,
Though I've been told that William once had water on the brain.
He was a sailor, a sailor hard to beat,
I know he was sailor by the tugboats on his feet.

Harvey,
Can you give me an artist or something to look for? I have 100's of cylinders and wouldn't know.

Look for Victor Scroll label 25240 "We Saw the Sea" by Ray Noble & His Orchestra. It's a good one.

"We joined the Navy to see the world
And what did we see?
We saw the sea
We saw the Pacific and the Atlantic
But the Atlantic isn't romantic
And the Pacific isn't what it's cracked up to be

Check out:
Decca 1214 (American)
The King's Navee
Ambrose and His Orchestra

also
Frank C Stanley on Victor
He sang songs such as, Asleep in the Deep and When the Bell in the Light House Rings
He had the right voice for these songs.

Frank C. Stanley also recorded those nautical songs on cylinders.

I have a British series Blue Amberol of Peter Dawson singing "The Admiral's Broom". http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/mp3s/ ... l8699d.mp3

Dawson had a great bass-baritone voice like Stanley. Dawson was a prolific recording artist and may have recorded a number of other nautical songs as well.

Here I am busy with other things and not paying attention to my own thread.  I have quite a few sailor and nautical records. I don't know if there is a discography or a cylinder list for these. If there is, please let me know. I guess I'll have to start looking through my old catalogs.
