Discarded Diamond Disc

Post by Brad »

I was browsing through a box of diamond disc records I just picked up and came across the record in the picture below. It was missing the paper label (not unusual) and it has the word "DISCARDED" pressed into the surface. There also appears to be an "X" scratched through the label area.

The letters are definitely pressed into the surface. I have not attempted to play it yet and there is nothing visually out of the ordinary for a 90 year old record in terms of wear and tear.

I don't recall every seeing or hearing about this before. Any ideas as to when and why this would have been done? Would this have been done at the factory before shipment or by a jobber?

I have quite a few of these, the ones I have are all black etched labels with similar stamping of Discarded in the record. I have found that most of them sound just fine. Some had what appears to be a slightly too small starting blank space, much less than even the normal ones that are sometimes small. I don't know the history of them but it might be they used it for culls as well as records they had decided to no longer make?

Thanks, that answers it. I noticed that many in the lot have unfinished edges. I'll look for more discarded stamps.
