Post by Gramtastic »

Hi,
I hope someone can tell me what this spring barrel fits - it is over 7 inches long and the drive gear is 4.5 inches in diameter - it weighs 7.1kg !!
Thanks

Hi;
That is a spring barrel from one of the larger Columbia cylinder machines, the Graphophone Grand for example. They are not much
fun to work on.

It's also similar, if not the same, as the assembly used in the Columbia BD disc machine. Yeah, I had mine done by someone else, I wasn't about to touch those beasts!

I have this same spring barrel assembly in my Columbia Elite. It seems that these were used in both cylinder and disk machines.

An Edison Triton spring assembly is made up of 2 cast iron barrels, one containing two springs and one containing a single spring. It, too is a beast, but not too bad to work with because the springs are relatively thin; .022", so even at 2" x 13' they are not too bad to handle. It weighs in at about 11 pounds or approximately 5 kg. That Columbia unit is really big. The 7.1 kg converts to a whopping 16.7 lb! What are the dimensions of the Columbia assembly?
