Columbia or Columbia client ?

What model is this? I thought it was a BZ but the tonearm, reproducer and speed control don't look like the BZs on the net and I don't have a Columbia book. The cabinet doesn't look to have been modified.

The Columbia book shows it to in fact be a Bijou (BZ), however the tone arm, reproducer, and back bracket are different in the book. Looks like the horn, and bracket are from a Standard Model A. ?? Studying the pic in the book further shows that the motor board is routed differently at the edge, maybe it too is from a different model or a Standard ??

The back bracket, horn and the motor board are the same as the BZ on this site http://www.victrolarepairservice.com/Sa ... iaBBZ.html but the speed control tonearm and reproducer are different. It doesn't look like this ever had a speed control hole on the front of the cabinet. Could this have been a later model?

I've owned two BZ's over the years-- I don't currently own either of them-- BUT- Both had a special red, 7 panel Columbia horn that, as far as I was able to determine, was made specifically for the BZ-- The BZ was meant to compete with the Victor "O"-- The horn in the picture you provided looks like a Standard "A" red horn- The BZ's are great looking little machines and they don't turn up very often.

Thanks Brad. I quess this is a frankenphone then. I wonder about the other parts. There definenately never was a hole in the front of this cabinet for a speed control and with the way the corners are mitered, I don't think it was replaced.

This is a late model BZ. The early ones had the early motor with the push-pull speed control and break. They used the early style tone arm with the analyzing reproducer. The later ones had the speed control and lever on the top of the motor board. They used the later arm with the Grafonola stlye reproducer. As stated before, a 7 petal red horn with black shading was used. The red horn you have, even though wrong, looks good and will work until you can find the correct horn.

Thanks Harvey, That's good to know. I guess it's worth cleaning up then. It needs a really good cleaning for sure and is missing the crank. Did it originally have the same Colubia decal on the front as the early BZs?

Yes, all the Columbia BZ machines used the Columbia profile decal.
