My New Green Case Edison Standard A #S185121

Just brought this home, an Edison Standard model A green case cylinder player from an auction in Chehalis, WA. I'm pretty excited - it has the 2-4 minute adaptor on it, a Model H reproducer, a crane mount on the back that I haven't seen before, and a 31" long lacquer coated (maybe) cardboard horn.

The stylus on the reproducer is broken, the 'belt' was a rotten rubber band, and I don't have a crank for it so I haven't fully wound it up yet, but the few winds I have been able to manage revealed a smooth, quiet running motor and the mandrel and gears spin freely.

Was the 2-4 minute adaptor standard for this model or an upgrade? The gear cover looks to be an Edison original.

Cliff, The 2/4 min attachment was an upgrade in 1908 when Edison came out with the 4 min. amberol records. The gear cover was a factory original to replace the "humped" 2 min. gear cover. Yes this is all original and a decent looking machine.

The cylinders weren't too exciting, though I did like the Edison cylinder cases with the sleeves in the center. Those were pretty cool. I was saving my money to bid strong on this phonograph. Fortunately, the bidding stopped before I ran out of money!

That type of crane mount was very common on both the suitcase model A and the banner case style model A like yours. The crane bars I have seen were a simple two piece design and would typically hold a smaller type ring mounted brass horn or black bodied/ brass belled horn.

Concerning the horn discussed already, I don't know why so much length was added to the neck via electrical tape. That horn without the bubba extension would be perfect for that machine with the original style rear mount crane.

Your machine looks all original and is very pretty with the natural orange aging on the front. Nice find and congratulations!
