The blue ones are going to be 4 minute cylinders.
There are two-minute blue amberols, the ones I have were made for the Mexican market. Not commonly found, though.

Search for "Mexican Blue Amberol" on YouTube and you'll see 3 or 4. They are uncommon.

Many of the Edison blue Amberol language course cylinders are two minutes too, presumably direct copies of the early two minute wax versions.

the grooves of a 2m cyl are very well defined while the 4m grooves are much finer comparable to the difference between a 78rpm and a 33rpm lp

a seasoned collector will even smell the difference as soon as the box full of cylinders is opened blue amberols have a very spesific smell like camfer(but not as defined and strong as with celuloid indestructibles)
the smell of mint wax 2m is kinda well almost sweet
the smell of Pathé cylinders is a mix between soap and chocolate
lioret cylinders smell of old oil like that of a phonograph motor this is because they used to lubricate them whilst playing them its the dried oil layer that gives off this smell

the smell of celulloid columbia's lamberts oxfords and indestructibles is campher the smell can be so strong that you can smell a box of indestructibles from across the room!
if the smell is that strong than they have dried-out and shrunk and probably won't fit a standard size mandrel and the grooves are compacted to such a extent that when playing them the reproducer will skip grooves

if a box of wax cyl smells moldy and bad than they are probably moldy to the core and unplayable

Very interesting. I will have to develop a scratch-and-sniff reference set and take with me on the road.

well we do develop some strange behaviour but the saying is having a good nose for finding things
other strange behaviour among phono collectors that i have seen are
stroking the fonograph (we just cant keep our hands off them!)
licking the finger and rub the dirt of a record label's text(sometines more than once with the same dirty finger!!)
talking to one's self when inspecting a phono or records
toutching the motor and sniffing the finger (whats that about!!)
i even seen a guy at a fair sitting at a table embracing a redison standard with one arm and eating french frys with the other hand like he was on an intimate date! (well atleast the phono could talk back!)

ps don't scratch cylinder records with your fingernaills

(sorry for going off topic)

Those of us who make cylinders can sometimes smell the different chemicals in each, for the most part, Brown wax are made of the same materials, except maybe Pathé'. When making the compounds the different brands and grades smell differently too.

It has been so many years since I could detect the smell of a Gold Moulded record: spicy, sweet, slightly like cinnamon... :)

well shawn you should get your hand on a mint Pathé salon cylinder very nice smell indeed
by the way shawn there's nobody making them we once asked duncan miller but he said it would be too difficult for a too small market yet here in europe we are bursting at the seames with intermediate phonographs with only molded-up salon cylinders to play them
would it be possible for you to make them i also have a Pathé recorder but no blanks to try it out
