Re: Credenza near Hartford, CT on CL
Any Credenza is a good Credenza in my opinion, but it looks like whoever "professionally" refinished it dispensed with any effort at replicating the original blended finish, and skipped using a grain filler, too. It's impossible to tell whether this one has a brass or pot-metal soundbox, though looking at the pictures closely, there does seem to be the faint suggestion of a crack on the back. I don't know if this is a very good deal at the asking price, but I guess if the soundbox is in fact a brass one in good condition, that would raise the value some.

No grain fill and a super glossy poly finish...just what every collector dreams of. I'm much happier with the original finish on my 8-30 even though it's not perfect.
That is a potmetal reproducer. It's hard to see, but the needle bar pivot housing is part of the casting rather than being a separate piece as on the brass ones. From my experience, a four door Credenza will most likely not have a brass reproducer.

Thanks very much for that detail regarding the sound-box casting, Jim. I didn't know about that, and so often sellers photograph them in the "up" position, making it impossible to count the holes on the front side. I'm glad to know there's this easy observation that identifies which type it is.
