not many peopla know how rare this machine is in the last 3 years i seen about 10 or so class M edisons but i only seen 3 areophones with yours beeing 1 of the 3 of those i only seen 1 complete example

YES! Definitely is almost the same machine. I see that your one is for vertical cut instead of lateral cut discs. ¿Do you have pictures of how the tone arm pivots vertically?

BTW, it was expensive but you can not even imagine how expensive was to to ship it from France to Chile...

another is on the site of patrick de caluwe a belgian collector and phono salesman for years that was the only pic i had of an aerophone its in a very sorry state
as you can see its seems to have the same arm problem as yours

Thank you. It looks that this one is also a very similar machine and as you say, with the same problem.

At least now I know that the internal mechanism is original and its going to be a really challenge to restore.

Today I've been investigating how to reproduce a horn like the original. It looks remarkably simmilar to the bell of a Sousaphone. I will have to get in contact whith a brass instrument maker to see if it is possible to reproduce. Would you mind to measure the total height and diameter of the horn?

Also I've been trying to cut a mica diaphragm without success. More mica sheets are coming next week to do more attempts.

I'm still trying to figure how to fix the tone arm. I think that originally it was rigidly attached to the horn piece and the sound box pivots like on the Victrola tone arms. Some images of the Aerophone advertisements show that there is something behind the sound box and maybe is the pivoting arm.

aerophone records came in 2 versions vertical and lateral
the phonograph should have a set of 2 reproducers yours is the lateral one the one in the pics is the vertical one

Today I made a lot of progress with the tone arm. It was scary but the good news is that I'm almost sure that most of the pieces of it are those that came with. I will try to post some pictures later this night.

Here are the promised pictures.

This is the the tone arm base with all the pieces:

As you can see, the base of the tone arm have a cylinder to regulate the volume.

I cleaned all the pieces and saw that there was something glued on the base of the tone arm. It was a sort of epoxy paste like the one that is used for repairing plumbing.

It was really scary to remove it and what I discovered behind was terrible.

I'm studying the possibility of casting a new piece in aluminium using the lost was method. The other alternative is to machine flat the broken part and attach a new ring to it.

Now, the fantastic news is that now I'm 100% sure that the tone arm is original. When doing pictures of it I discovered thanks to the flash a faint "Aerophone" engraved on the arm. (you can see it in the next picture) On top of that, inside the contraption that was glued to the base, I found two rings that are the joint of the arm. One tightly matches the inside of the arm and the other goes where the broken part of the base is.

The other pieces of the tone arm are here. I like the patina they have so I'm discarding re-chroming them.

And now one question: This little piece was soldered in the middle of the tone arm. It has a small hole (to attach a resting support?) and can pivot inside the capsule. ¿Does anybody knows what it is?

Hi all,

I found a book with a couple of pictures of an Aerophone. I looks that there are at least 3 different versions: With internal horn, external and both!
