Start them young!
This little girl has been let loose with a Pixie Grippa portable made by Perophone of London. Let's hope she took good care of the auxiliary horn, which is often missing from surviving examples.

I brought my Columbia portable to the family Christmas this past year to play Christmas records. Who needs a Jones Motrola when you have kids with energy to spare?

You are a braver man than I am!
My two grand-daughters, aged five and (almost) three, are not allowed to play with "Grandad's Toys". At least, not yet......

If you are worry about a kid breaking a spring, just have them wind up an Edison Triumph, They will not likely have the muscles to break that spring!

My nearly 3 year old has been winding ME up since before she could talk. I even let her use one of my EMG's with a Meltrope soundbox. . Ofcourse she has her own records, surprisingly few breaks. Fat's Waller being her favorite at the moment. She also has her own modern turntable to play current LP's and singles. She loves the new David Bowie LP, I've had to get my own copy as hers is so scratched.

The Model 100 "Cadet", circa 1929, was the smallest machine made by UK Columbia. Although it was not specifically marketed for children, this little chap seems happy enough....

Re: Start them young!
Both my daughters got to their teen years without breaking a record or antique artifact of any kind, but they aren't really in the habit of playing records, either. As toddlers they were taught to be careful, and as pre-teens and after they were both involved with athletics and so became physically adept and less apr to drop stuff.
At the CAPS show in August there were several pre-teens shopping for, and walking around with, 78s - and asking vendors with electric portables to preview stuff. I don't know whose kids they were, but it was really cool.

All of this is a bit of a worry if one collects brown wax cylinders! I think I will wait until the kids have got a bit older. Like 30+...

If I remember correctly from "The Mikado," one does not reach the age of discretion until 49!
