Grafonola - Gothic Cabinet w/dbl doors

Post by cincyjake971 »

Hello all:
I'm hoping for some help getting some info on the cabinet I have. I have seen this Gothic style in in single door model, but have not been able to find one with the dbl doors. It has been in the family for ages and I can remember a stereo (not the original works but probably someone put one in sometime in the 60's) being in there which is now gone so it's essentially just a very pretty cabinet.

So....I'm wondering how many of these they made (I'm guessing not a ton - at least that are surviving - since I have never found a posting or picture of another online), second what the current value might be for it, when it was made (and if there was a model #/style name/etc),and lastly, would it be worthwhile having it restored with original works (assuming this can be done/the components be found/someone to do it..etc...etc)
It's in essentially very good condition - other than the paint - whether faded or very dirty (depending on just how bright they would have originally been) My mom had the half of the top that opened sealed shut but I think that is still the original wood.
Any help/assistance/comments would be every so greatly appreciated!!! :)

Ref.: Columbia Phonograph Companion Volume II, @1996 by Robert W. Baumbach, pg. 170. An updated edition of this book (only available for the Apple iPad and Mac) is available at: http://www.mulhollandpress.com/styled-5 ... index.html

This appears to be a Columbia Model Gothic aka P-6, introduced in 1917, with an original price of $750.00 (the price was raised to $775.00 in 1920, and then dropped to $550.00 in 1921). The cabinet was offered in "old brown oak normally with polychrome decoration". The polychrome decoration could be optionally deleted. This model originally had an electric motor, as well as accommodations for 80 records in tilting trays behind the left door.

This is indeed a beautiful cabinet! But assuming the cabinet has been completely gutted, attempting to get it back in "original condition" would undoubtedly be difficult and expensive. If it were mine, I would proudly display it in my living room!

Enjoy it,
Bob

Thanks Bob! Have you seen this particular cabinet for sale anywhere? I'm trying to get an idea of value both for a possible sale of it/if not that than for insurance. Thanks!
