Making automatic stops for cylinder phonographs

I've been looking through my books and various on-line resources, but can't find much out there besides REPEATERS, which I'm not keen on at the moment.

Even though you're not keen on repeaters (lack of gentleness?), their designs could generate some engineering ideas for how to accomplish an auto-stop. If only all cylinder phonographs had a weighted brake switch like the Opera, this would be a simple project!

I made a replica of the Babson stop for my Edison Standard A and it works very well.

I'm helping out on a dealer table at Wayne on the 12th so I'll bring it along for anyone who would like to see it in action.

Several years ago I had some stop arms laser cut from stainless steel. My plan was to build the stop mechanisms complete and sell them. Due to lack of time I've only completed the one on my standard. I'll bring some to the show in kit form including the arm, rubber snubber which contacts the mandrel, wire and 1 optional washer. Tonight I'll dig through my shop to find the receipt from the machine shop because I forgot what I paid to have them made. Then I can come up with a price that will certainly be well under three figures.

Sounds cool. You'll be encouraging some cylinder phonograph owners (including myself) to use them more than they do presently.

Here's a photo of a completed stop. Its different from the one shown in the earlier posting because I made for the Standard B.

If you are interested and not going to Wayne I can sent them by mail. I'll post a photo of the unfinished brakes so you can get an idea of what you would need to do. Still don't know the price and have huge stack of mail to go through tonight. Maybe I'll find the machine shop receipt tomorrow.

As an expensive last resort you could upgrade to an Opera, Amberola 1A, 1B, III. They had these features as standard equipment.

What Valecnik says is true, but you might need the services of a machine shop anyway. I have noticed many if not most of the Operas and Amberola 1Bs (and probably IIIs, although they turn up too infrequently to generalize) listed on eBay at least are missing their auto stop rods.
