Victor 7 Inch Records

As I posted earlier I came across 5 of these records as follows:

"March from El Capitan" #304

"Intermezzo, Cavalleria Rusticana" #353

"Finale, William Tell Overture" #321

"The Warblers" #1168

"Semper Fidelis" #1175

These are all by Souza's Band

I cannot seem to find anything about these records. Can anyone enlighten me on these? Thanks

Depending on the "take" numbers, these range from 1900 to 1902.

Victor had 7" records as one available size until about 1907. They sold for 50 cents. There was also a short lived 8" size.

Thanks for the info. All 5 records just have the number sans letter prefix.

THAT'S interesting, and thanks for the label scan. Obviously, EDVR doesn't know about these variants. Could you please list the matrix number (handwritten, should start with the letter "a", probably located at 6 o'clock with respect to the label) and the take number (handwritten, usually underlined, probably located at 9 o'clock with respect to the label)?

ok here we ago again:

321 has a "6" scratched on the record at 9 o'clock and 321 scratched at the top.

353 has a "6" at 9 o'clock and "a353" scratched at the top

304 has a "3" at 9 o'clock and "a304" at the top

1168 has nothing other than the "1168" on the label. This record says "Victor Monarch" on the label

1175 has a "3" at 9 o'clock and 1175 at the top.

EDVR apparently no longer exists and has now been absorbed into the Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR).

According to the Collector's Guide to Victor Records, the matrix number only appeared physically on early Victors from April 1903 to March 1906, "after which the inscription of the matrix number was moved inside the label area, eliminating it from pressed copies of the record." It then goes on to suggest that therefore the number printed on the label is usually the information the average collector has to work with.

DAHR gives Dutchman's 321 as "[Pre-matrix A-]321", which I take to mean that this is a pre-matrix record and that the "A-" is an editor's explanatory insertion that is not really there on the actual disc. It was recorded on October 5, 1900, 114 years ago tomorrow.

There was a different later 10" black label bearing 321 (matrix B-276) recorded by Sousa in August 1903.

All this information can be ferreted out using the search link I provided earlier.
