The grandparents had left with the children for a long weekend, school holiday here. I'd just sat down with a glass of wine about 7:30 pm when everything went dark, almost. I'd also previously lit a couple oil lamps and one Aladdin, which we do some times on the weekend. Checking outside, it was quickly clear that the whole neighborhood was dark.
Some music on the Edison seemed the only logical thing to do, so we did and so we danced after lighting a few more lamps and finding a couple flashlights.
By midnight the wine was almost gone and it was bedtime. Having finished in the bathroom by the light of a finger lamp, I headed downstairs to start putting out the lamps. Power was restored.

Nice, Bruce. That's the way to make the best of a situation so many would find challenging!

my machines likewise have kept me (and at times guests, several on a few occasions) company through various unanticipated power outages... my favorites being the ones during hurricanes and major summer rain storms.

I can tell you one thing. Reading those etched label Diamond Discs by the light of a kerosene lamp can be challenging. Even figuring out where to lower the reproducer is a bit difficult.
