Well, the first casting is out and I can't say it's an unqualified success. The paper clay recipe I used is too dense and shrank a lot. This piece will require a lot of finishing work, made much worse because the material is as hard as a rock and nearly impossible to sand. Sound-wise, I'm not happy. On my Victor II it's all mid tones. One good thing is that it totally attenuates all the hiss and crackle but there's no bass and whatever else makes it through sounds reedy. I'm going to try a lighter paper clay recipe this time that's mostly paper pulp. If I do more work with this horn it will be to practice paint finishes.

What a cool journey thank you for sharing. I have not seen this process completed before.

I would like to ask how you layer (apply) the final horn material inside the mold? I assume that in the large end you can apply material by hand but what about the 1 inch opening?

Thanks for sharing. Do you apply the horn material to each half of the mold and then bond them together or do you make it in one piece?
