Good insight on McCormack's evolution, Rastus. As to the recordings, the discography in the (excellent) http://www.mccormacksociety.co.uk/ shows that he recorded from the late 20's onwards in England, most frequently in the Abbey Road HMV studio.

The records he made in Abbey Road No. 3 during the war are among his best. He continued to mature as a singer even as his voice declined.

Frank Sinatra was like that - and some others. They get better with a worn instrument.

Aha--so I thought. Bear with me, I'm learning here. I assume those numbers on the above list are not American recordings, which explains why they aren't listed in Moses.

On that 1928 recording, Journet sounds absolutely terrific. The orchestra, however, is something else again: big tuning problems here and there, especially in the woodwinds.

Yes, you're right. I didn't see these listed in my Victor discography and these appear to be European pressings. The 1928 recording is unusual. Journet's voice is splendid, but it is sung in French rather than the original German. The instrumental accompaniment is less than stellar.

Actually, I think I prefer it in French! (Please don't tell my forebears!).
