Ouch! That's the same desecration as the phonograph liquor cabinets, just on a smaller scale. And the same seller has about 10 or so more very nice cylinder boxes listed. So sad

What's the big deal? It's not like they ruined it. I have a Gold Moulded record box on my desk...and it has pens in it.

That's an easily reversible modification as opposed to making it out of a cylinder. Although I have a few cylinders in such poor condition that they might as well be used for pen holders.

I have used one as a pencil holder on my desk for years. The kids in my class were always fascinated with it.
