OT - Penny-Farthing

While driving on the I-40 near Kingman, AZ what did I see? That's right, a long rider on his Hi-Wheeler. I wanted to stop and take a picture, but at 75 mph and other cars on the road, too much distance had past. What a sight, only a glimps, it seemed unreal. A dedicated emthusiast like us, enjoying a passion. After a quick google it seems to be a thing.

Yea some friends here in CZ are in a vintage bicycle club. They dress in period 1920s costume and bike to/around various events. They have a lot of fun with it.

Count me in on the fun. In 1964 my folks said I was too big to have a Sting-Ray. Now I can have as many as will fit in the garage along with the other toys. Jerry

yea its fun to ride a high bike and to be on the same level as the trafic lights but it can be a pain in the ass sometimes braking at high speed not advisable you can tilt foreward and break your yaw also stepping on can give that effect i would mostly go to a wall or traffic light and push off once on the run everything is dandy with stopping i would advice the same as stepping on
i even had an accident on my highrider my wheel broke off at the level of the handlebar and it broke in 2 i went down amidst pieces of sharp metal and got a mean poke from the pedal when i landed on it i had a black bellybutton for weeks!

i sold my highrider 5 years ago it was simply too high for my taste it was one of the bigger ones sitting level was nearly 2 meters off the ground!! i'm now in the market for a more modest version like the ones in the pics
the bike had been in a bicycle shop window for 30 years until it went bankrupt and i bought it for peanuts

Those are great photos! How nice to have outings like that.

Jerry, I had one ot those in black. I'll need to find a photo and post it.

It was interesting to see that bike in the middle of nowhere. He had the spine loaded with gear and a basket on the handlebars.

What a site to see,i sold my pennyfarthing 7 yrs ago and miss it alot,hope to find another but there getting difficult to find for a decent price,long gone are the days of field finds.

Coincidentally, I sold this '69 DL-1 to pay for my first two HMV 102s ... A fantastic ride ... just a bit too big for me though.

I searched on-line and this is very close to what I had seen.

Jerry, it was a Sting-Ray knock-off. I called it Barracuda , after Diver Dan's Baron Barracuda character.
