FOUND: New Flange Gasket for HMV No.5B Sound-Box

Post by Player-Tone »

I am trying to find a new replacement flange gasket for an HMV No.5B Sound-Box. I tried Ron Sitko but he is closed until January 3rd, and I am impatient.
The center ring of this gasket has a hole rather than the normal pin, and the screw actually acts like the locking pin rather than one that is built in. -I don't know if that is normal or not.

Here is a picture of what needs replaced:

Let me know if you have one to sell or of a supplier that sells these.
-Thanks!

I think all the isolators you'll find for sale here in the States will have the pin. You would have to modify one by grinding off the pin and drilling a hole.

As an alternative, you could use an isolator with the pin, and substitute a set screw that doesn't have the pin end.

As far as I know, all the No.5 flange gaskets have a hole in the top to take the screw that acts as the locating pin.The grub screw in the bottom edge of the soundbox just bites into the rubber flange, and doesn't go through to the inside edge of the flange.
I've just checked on about a dozen of mine, and they are all the same. The gaskets are available on British eBay, but at around the £10 mark, plus another £10 for postage anywhere in the world. Ouch! That, by the way, doesn't include the metal inner ring, you have to use the old one. I now make my own, using a product called "Sugru", which is a soft black compound that sets overnight into a fairly hard rubber. Just position the inner ring, complete with the locating screw, and fill the void with the compound. Sets overnight, and is the perfect solution. I find it easier to add the projecting ring afterwards rather than try to get it perfect in one go. The additional ring is not necessary, except for cosmetic reasons.

If you're really impatient, I'll be happy to post a complete isolator to you, but how long it would take to get to you from England at this time of year is anyone's guess.

IF you are in a hurry, you can purchase an orthophonic flange from Walt Summers via eBay, grind off the existing pin, and drill the flange to suit your need. The regular orthophonic gaskets fit the HMV 5b as do Victrola No 2 flanges (I use my HMV 5b on my Vic V with the No 2 flange inserted to play electrically recorded discs).

That's Ken Priestley. He is a great guy and honest seller, I have purchased from him several times before and was always satisfied.

I recently bought my rubber connector from Chunny in Hong Kong. It fits perfectly and I reused my original inner ring. Chunny had these copied from originals. Here is his original posting on the forum:

For performance and originality I cannot recommend any better. For the Model 5B you would order "Type H" from his current ebay posting here:

I read Chunny was just trying to break even on his costs for tooling these up, so when his current stock is gone he may not run another batch for a long time.

$16.00 + $16.00 post from Hong Kong but worth it.
