Thanks for asking. This may be more than you need.phonojim wrote:@AudioAntique:
Rob, What is your source about Edison having had a chance to obtain Nipper? I've been at this a long time and have never heard about it. Jim
The origin of the famous English painting of “His Master’s Voice” by Francis Barraud has been well researched and documented by Leonard Petts and others. The source: “The story of ‘Nipper’ and the ‘His Master’s Voice’ picture painted by Francis Barraud” by Leonard Petts offers the following information:
Barraud stated that he completed the painting prior to the year 1899 of a dog listening to a cylinder phonograph. A photograph of the painting depicts the dog, Nipper, listening to an Edison Bell “Commercial” phonograph. Barraud’s intention was to offer the painting to the company, but was turned down by James E. Hough. George Frow recalled Hough’s grandson recounting his grandfather’s emphatic remark that “Dogs don’t listen to phonographs”. Later, in May of 1899, Mr. Barraud paid a visit to the Gramophone Company to present a photograph of the painting to Barry Owen. It appears that they did not meet, but Owen did contact him suggesting that they were interested in the picture. Negotiations continued through the summer and in September an offer of €100 was made for the painting and copyright. Of course the deal was contingent upon Barraud painting out the phonograph and replacing it with the current model of Gramophone.
The story of Nipper’s arrival to America with over 1800 trademark collectibles are photographed and described in our books: Nipper Collectibles and Nipper Collectibles Vol. II

Thought I would add a few photos to all these great shots. One is with the tree on top of my Regent Junior, the Model A on top of my big Pathé and another of an Edison/Pooley record cabinet. Merry Christmas and HNY.

Ah, yes... I'm almost as serious an absintheur as phonographiste. I also have a rather substantial collection of antique absinthiana.

I just acquired the taste a couple years ago, so I don't have any antique absinthiana (yet). But I can see how it might become equally additive like phonographs - and equally expensive.
