Yes, it sadly is true. I had a similar experience at a museum where I worked. When I came in to take over the job, the Victrola had an Edison disc on the turntable, but I quickly replaced it with a Victor disc.

Yep: in fact I was moved to rescue a nice DD, when I saw it on the turntable of a VV-VI some time ago...

It seems that even when on the right machine Edison diamond discs aren't always safe.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ldtUFB86TqQ that reproducer sounds like it must be tracking at an odd angle as it has a strange scratchy hiss and it skip constantly.
