Edison Triumph

Post by Gramtastic »

Hi, hope you can help me here...
I have been offered a Triumph but know nothing about this model and haven't seen one before. It is in oak with a banner case but is missing its reproducer (sorry can't post any pics as its not mine). Would the banner case make it a model A and what sort of reproducer would I need as the carriage seems to have a sort of loop coming down from the circle (if this makes sense !)so I assume it is a specific type of reproducer ? Will it be hard to find one ? it also looks as though the reproducer is horizontal so does this mean the Triumph only had a cygnet horn ? I also assume it will only be a 2 minute machine ?

Any help gratefully received .....

Thanks
Andrew

It will be much easier to answer your questions accurately if you post pictures.

It will be difficult to say for certain without detailed pictures, but, assuming nobody has cobbled it together, a banner case points towards a model A. This would normally mean a 2 minute only machine, so depending on the manufacturing date it might have come with an Automatic or later with a Model C reproducer. Not sure what you mean with "a loop coming down from the circle"??? Again, pictures would help. If it really has a horizontal reproducer carriage it was most likely upgraded to a 2 and 4 minute player when the Amberol cylinders came out around 1908. The switch between 2 and 4 minutes is accomplished by pushing in / pulling out the smaller part of the pulley on the left side of the feed screw - if it has been converted.

In general the Triumph is a solid machine with a very powerful 3 spring motor and cost $50 when new. It is a big and heavy machine though, but great for playing. A banner case Model A with combination attachment is a very attractive and versatile machine. I would definitely consider it.

Is this a loop coming out of a circle (see pic)? If so, you have the horizontal carriage to accept a Model O (2&4 min) or Diamond B (4 min) reproducer.

If that is the carriage on the machine, is there a cygnet horn mount on the case?

Reproducers shouldn't be hard to find for this.

Hi , thanks for all the info - yes that looks like the carriage arm. There are holes in the back of the case which could have been for a bracket to hold a cygnet horn.

If it's an untouched original banner Triumph, it would take a C or earlier reproducer. By "untouched" I mean as it came from the factory as a two minute player. If it was upgraded to 2&4 minute capability, it could have a carriage for the smaller H reproducer or a carriage for the larger O or Diamond B reproducer. For the same reason, it could have had anything from the little 14" black & brass horn to a Cygnet if it's been converted to play four minute cylinders. If you can't post photos, could you give us the asking price. It might be worth the purchase and then post photos. Jerry

So, basically, it appears you have a Triumph A that was 'Amberolized' ca. 1908 or later, to accommodate a Cygnet horn and a Model O / Diamond B reproducer.

You might check to see whether it has the combination gearing as well: the upper pulley should have a section that can be pulled out or pushed in to change the speed.

Thanks all of you for the advice - I will try to get some photos to confirm what you think. How hard will it be to get say a model O reproducer ?

It's not so difficult but it will be expensive. Expect to pay $4oo or more.
