Pathé Phonograph Novice

Post by Samuelhadamson »

Dear all,

I received a Pathé phonograph mechanism as a gift this Christmas and was hoping I might be able to find out a bit more about it here. I have had a Mead gramophone and a portable Columbia for a number of years now, but this is my first phonograph.

I would therefore be very grateful for any information that members might have on this particular model and also where I might be able to procure a horn and reproducer to complete the mechanism.

Many thanks,
Sam

Hello,

Yours is a Pathé model 1 (also named as COQ in the earlier Pathé catalogs). It was available in this case style as well as a flip over case, and a neccessaire.

You are missing the horn, reproducer & horn support arm. They occasionally pop up on Ebay.

For more information and to possibly find the missing parts, try the PhonoGalerie in Paris:
French: http://www.phonogalerie.com/lang-francais/
English: http://www.phonogalerie.com/lang-english/
Email : [email protected]

I found my missing Pathé reproducer elbow/connector there last spring...

I have the same machine in a flip-over case, as pictured on my avatar. These are great little cylinder machines and are capable of playing standard size cylinders and the larger salon style.

You might also contact René Rondeau, who is a member of the forum... "TinfoilPhono", he has a website with items for sale and is very knowledgeable about these. I have purchased several Pathé cylinders from him in the past...

well there can be a little more to it than that
suport arm
there where 2 types of support arms for the coq
1 : a support arm that is directly connected to the horn with a butterfly screw with a hinge underneath (you could also call that one the Pathé el cheapo support arm)
2 : a support arm with a 2 part system with the general support arm and a secondary part with a hinge that fits into the general support arm this arm also comes with a spring metal clamp in witch you can clamp the horn in upright position

the horn
the first types of the coq where columbia model b copies thus they had no horn suport and the horn would fit on the trunion the horn used in this case was a simple cone the general color for these was red

(on this one the color is black)

your coq model was the third type
the horn you see the most on these is the spun aluminium horn (i think paul agnard still sells these)
how ever sometimes you also see these phono's with a witch-hat horn in this case the horn is red with either a aluminium bell or a nickle plate brass bell

the reproducer
again multiple choices
the first coq models with horn support came with the Pathé laurent reproducer a copy of the reproducer from the columbia model b
this reproducer was continued on the suport arm models and would slide inside the horn (aldough some apear with rubber sleeves and the boxes show the orpheus name)
the most used are the gutta percha orpheus reproducers these have a rubber sleeve to fit tightly on the horn
the orpheus comes in 2 sizes the earlyer ones are quite small in diameter more like the diameter of a puck reproducer
the second version of the orpheus was 2 times bigger
a third option was the rex reproducer wich was even bigger in diameter than the orpheus type 3

note: this rex does not have the rubber sleeve Pathé co-produced these for a short wile
pathe coq intermediate spun horn.jpg

note: the second machine is not the model coq but the coq did come sometimes with the orpheus verite wire frame and witch-hat

(there where even more possibilities like this coq with hunting horn)

Thanks to everybody for these very informative replies. I will try the contacts you mention for parts.

Could I also just ask what members' thoughts on reproduction horns and reproducers are?

Thanks,
Sam

You can buy well-made reproduction Pathé aluminum horns and reproducers, they are available. Mike Child, a forum member based in England, frequently sells them on Ebay (soundgen is his trade name).

Samuel,

What you will need is
1.) horn support rod, both pictured are Pathé but for your model, the longer one with the spring attachment at the fromt that can be used to support the horn when not in use.

2.) a horn with the appropriate attachment to connect to the horn support

3.) reproducer . the type that fits on the end of the horn with rubber attachment

This is how the elements attach together

As Pathé used the same pieces 1 to 3 for models 1, 2, 3, 4 they are not impossible to find if one has that time to wait and search.

I've recently bought (from eBay) my first cylinder phonograph (picture attached). If anyone can help me, I would like to know which model is it. It should definitely be a Pathé but that's all I've been able to trace with any certainty - except that it has to be made before 1906, right?
By the way: what parts am I missing based on the picture...is there something I definitely need for exhibition "credibility"? (I'm only using it for exhibition concerning my technology history and law-related PhD and I'm not planning to fix it. I wanted to have either an American or European cylinder-operated phonograph in addition to the mostly much later objects I use in my presentations.)
Thank you very much in advance! (BTW sorry for the typo in my username, I can't change it anymore.)

Some parts for your Pathé nº1 (late model):

This horn is on sale on EBay right now, it has the correct support which is quite rare.

A reproducer rubber connector also extremely rare:(new production):

A Pathé reproducer which needs new gaskets and sapphire:
