Anybody want to play with some springs?

Post by winsleydale »

So that new 8-12 was thumping pretty loudly/frequently when I got it, and I decided I better clean it all up inside. The springs came out okay; they went back in okay, all going the right direction... but when it was crank time, at least 2 of them got all bent up. I fold. Where can I send these barrels?

The inside end fold over? If so, it sounds like you put them in backwards. Since you did the removal and cleaning before, you can probably mangage to make this right yourself. Just remove the mainsprings and use a couple of pair of pliers to reshape the ends and put them back in. You can always send it to George later if you need to.

Good advice. I don't know how they got in there backward because they can only go in one way, but I will sit down and take a real close look because that has to be it.

I assume you placed a piece of masking tape on the barrels for each spring, marking each with an arrow to show the direction of each winding...??.
This is highly recommended in any repair book on spring repair/replacement.
If not, problems such as these can happen.

As for barrel placement.....I always take a quick pic to use as my guide... ;).

If you have bent the annealed ends of the spring the opposite way....you may now have weaken (cause a crease) them by bending back.

Therefore, you may have the motor up and running....however, the springs may break very soon after as the highest force is on these ends.

Just curious....why do you assume a spring can only go one way....???.

Instead of attaching to studs, there are little ridges inside the barrel to hook the springs onto, and they face a certain way, with the one spring going the opposite direction of the other in that barrel.

I always take an awl and scratch the direction the spring is wound inside the barrle when I take remove it. I can't remember that stuff otherwise. If it's those springs that have the ends bent to hook over that notch on the end you'll probably have to get new one's. I think on those later springs they got away from the pear shaped hole on the inside of the spring. Those four spring motors can get confusing when it comes to pulling the springs out and putting them back in.

the notch on the shaft of the spring barrel always points to the end of the spring if you put the spring in backwards it will either not catch of mangle the end
and as said above scratch a little arrow on the inside of the barrel to point the right way for the spring to go in

Well, you've certainly got the springs in the right way round. As you say, there's only one way they can go in.

Is this a four spring motor? Is it possible that you switched the barrels around?
