What's going on in the UK?

Post by Nat »

I used to look forward every day to pictures of steam-driven gramophones, 20-foot horns, and other wild eccentricities! I hope the UK hasn't "normalized"!

I've sent emails before the holidays to two dealers in the UK inquiring about machines they have available,
Never heard back...

Maybe the country shut down for the winter?

The UK does tend to close down for a couple of weeks for Christmas and New Year, but for lovers of the elephantine all is not lost :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281556726773? ... EBIDX%3AIT

The seller appears to be none other than Frank James, author of "The EMG Story". The starting price looks very reasonable, and a prospective purchaser could not hope for a better provenance than this. I might be tempted myself, but I doubt that my usually supportive wife would agree.

I have probably seen and heard this machine on one of my visits to Frank, but it was one machine among several and I cannot remember anything about it.

To the best of my knowledge we're all very much alive and kicking, if quiet lately!

Regarding this monster http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 11&t=14931 there are serious moves under way to restore and re-house it. Very exciting! But I don't want to steal any more of anyone else's thunder - hopefully more details will be posted here later in the year.

Lovely! And were I in the UK I'd probably be the poorer now.

But I meant walking beam engines powering an EMG with a 25-foot horn stretching across the lawn of some lovely home in Dorset - that kind of thing.

All part of the Empire - at least as far as gramophones go!

I have a ranch in BC - summers only now, but I love the area just north of Princeton. y cabin is stuffed with phonographs (see my avatar).
