Hexaphone 103 - questions answered, thanks.

Post by Roaring20s »

If you have worked on one of these or have one, we would really like to hear from you.

MECHANICAL OPERATION ISSUE

I'm assisting my buddy Terry with this project. Last week he put the motor back together, we used Mica Monster's very nice belting material and happily gave it a mechanical test.

Cranked it six times and it ran an incomplete cycle. It function well. Happy to see it in operation, we were able to get it to run another incomplete cycle by flipping levers. It was cranked again (possibly prior to using the power from the first round) and now it will not crank or function.

We investigated a little more. We asked ourselves, what part of the machine is preventing movement? By wiggled the crack and we can see that the associated gears also wiggle. So we visually divided the motor in half (see photo Back.1) and decided to disconnected the crank gears from the spring gear to see the result. In doing this, the crank was able to turn the gears on the side closest to it.

(see photos BackDetail.1, and BackDetail.2); screw 'A' was loosened, shaft 'B' was pulled until spacer 'C' dropped off it. Gear 'D' had enough play to be moved away from its corresponding gear.

Further realizing that we do not understanding the mechanism's interactions, we reassembled, and seek guidance. FYI, It worked prior to restoration.

I have taken other high resolution images at various angles. They were taken at various points in its assembly. Hopefully problems can be identified or instruction better aided.

OTHER QUESTIONS and REQUESTS and OBSERVATIONS

What does this rod do? We think it may engage the cylinder drive gear?

see Photos 9, 10 and 11 showing the crank, 9 and 10 is with and without what seems to be a cover, but it does not look correct. Photo 11 has a cotter pin and a clamp to prevent it from being removed. What does yours look like?

see Photo 15 shows the hole that goes through the bed. It is for the latch release. Please supply photos of the top view and the latch rod from inside the cabinet. This is missing and we need to see what it looks like.

see Photo 17 shows the back of the horn. Note the hole. The back cover of the case is notched to support the back of the horn and gets screwed to it as well. The horn hangs solid, with no other internal support. Just thought it was an odd set-up.

Thanks,
James and Terry

Terry hunkered down and found a spring had to be attached and got it rolling again. He also got the coin feed assembly working smoothly. Today we worked on the timing. We learned that asking questions about most of this would be very hard to answer, even if to could remember all of the steps you've taken! It was hard enough for the two of us to recall what we were doing hours after something impeded the progress. It was great to drop in a nickel, crank it six times and then see the mechanical actions take over! From the tinkering and fails, the spring seemed to be wound tight so Terry took off the belt and ran it down a little.

Next we focused on the Reproducer carriage and its operation. Several trial runs revealed its operation and those adjustments were easier to work on. The Reproducer was placed on the carriage, its position fine tuned, and we were ready to hear music. That cost another nickel. The speed has adjusted as Billy Murray sang. This was a good day in the life of this Hexaphone.

A good photo of these areas are still requested. The center image has a cover that does not do the job and may not even belong. These two nuts seem to need a fig leaf of some kind. And we are just curious about the interior configuration. PHOTO OBTAINED.
Thanks to member raphael for helping out on this part. The nut are exposed. Not covering on his 103 either. Also, the cover that is between the two nut should be to the right of the two nuts. A damaged thread prevents this from being in the correct place..

In the parts box was found the spring steel that works the lid latch release. We still would like to see photos. We worked it out.

Thanks to Mike T. on the Phono-L for sending a photo of the cover. This is the inner surface of the cover.
