A question for EARLY C250 owners

After my long-winded (and probably very boring) reply in the previous post, I'd like to get back on track with my initial query:

For those of you with C250's, specifically, and especially below serial number 30,000, please.

Hi folks,

I'm currently working on the history of the C250/C19, and have some questions in addition to the ones I posted for the C250/C19 Database Project http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=16837.

You'll need to remove the turntable to inspect the governor. Don't forget to turn the speed control knob all the way down [clockwise] to the "stop" position first [Or let the machine run all the way down].

1) What is the serial number?

2) Does your governor have 2 or 3 springs?

3) This concerns the slot (an anti-torque feature) in the governor sleeve (the end with the speed regulator "disk"):
Does your governor have a screw with a SLEEVE BUSHING in the oblong machined slot, or does it have only a SCREW HEAD in the slot?

4) Is your motorplate flat along the entire top surface, or does it have a circular depression? (See photos)

I must say that for a guy who has been seriously collecting for JUST OVER ONE YEAR, Fran has already made contributions to our hobby, and continues to pursue research in order to make future contributions. I take my hat off him!

I too thought the "roller" was found only on the later "shock-proof" governor because of what I've read. I suspect we all may have been led astray by a few of Frow's reasoned but inaccurate conclusions that appeared in his otherwise excellent and indispensable books. But it's a good example of how primary research sources are so important when we're seeking information. Secondary sources such as articles and books (including my own) always carry the possibility of the author's misinterpretation. Footnotes help, but nothing replaces going to the original sources - - despite the errors that occasionally pop up there as well!

Again - congratulations to Fran for his diligence. Not everyone is willing to seriously learn the information before imparting it!

You know, better than anyone, how difficult it's been for me to overcome my preconceptions and "follow the evidence".

As you also know, I am in complete awe at the dedication it takes to collect and disseminate the amount of information authors like yourself, Mr. Frow and so many others have done.

...and I have only concentrated on one very small (and very thin) sliver of time in the talking machine universe.
