My William and Mary Console has taken to making a squeaking noise about 20 seconds after you start the turn table and the several more times before the record reaches the mid point normally. I oiled the points that take the oil but it made no difference. Anyone ever have this happen?

If you are referring only to the oiling cups, then I would extend the scope of your efforts to lube anything that moves - the spindle, the feedscrew, every bushing, every gear tooth. If afterwards it still squeaks, post a video for us to listen to.larryh wrote:I oiled the points that take the oil ....Larry

If it squeaks with a regular period, look for moving parts that rotate at the cadence of the squeak.
At about 20 seconds, I would look at the spring barrels. If they are in the same orientation (or they rotate 1 complete revolution) for every squeak, you have located the source.

Hear, Hear! Don't trust the oil tubes to be free and clear, they will get "gunked up". The best way to ensure lubrication is to take the mechanism out and place it on a bench. Yes, it's a bit of a pain, but it's not really that difficult.VintageTechnologies wrote:If you are referring only to the oiling cups, then I would extend the scope of your efforts to lube anything that moves - the spindle, the feedscrew, every bushing, every gear tooth. Please don't take this the wrong way but does it do it without a record on the platter and a different record?

I had a VERY similar problem and after a long search found that it was the fiction pads that press on the govener needed oiling.

Another thought is the brake lever. It doesn't take much to cause it to start scraping the turntable.

It does it on various records. It sort of sounds like a creaking door effect. I suspect after reading these post that something needs grease that is activated intermittently, but what I am not sure.. I will most likely have to pull the motor as much as I want to avoid that and try to get it to do it out of them machine.dutchman wrote:Please don't take this the wrong way but does it do it without a record on the platter and a different record?

Check the auto-brake mechanism, under the turntable... it might be scraping the inside of the turntable as Fran mentioned previously...

It is probably in the horn feed system. My C-19 has done this, and it was the horn feed system it would squeak, about 3 times during the play of a record, pay attention to the upper bushing where the horn lift lever is, the lower bushing with the ball joint, and the feed rack and worm gear, it most likely is there, also check that the friction spring is not rubbing on the moulded arc when it is playing.
