Surprising audio comparisons with MicaMonster's belting

Post by barnettrp21122 »

Hello!
I've long suspected that the replacement thick leather belting generally available for phonographs exacerbates any flutter caused by the motor governor or related issues. I ordered some of MicaMonster's belting and have replaced the belts in two of my machines, and I am very pleased at how they sound. MicaMonster's material is softer, thinner and stretchier than the other finished belting.
Just to be sure I wasn't imagining it, I recorded the same excerpt of a violin and piano piece on my Fireside before changing the belt. Below is a link to audio clips of the first belt, and MicaMonster's.
Please take a listen.
I think you'll notice quite a difference too!

I'd replaced the old governor springs and weights with new ones from Ron Sitko, and although there was some improvement, MicaMonster's belting really helped in making the sound even better. I'm sold!

Bob, There is quite a difference. The old belt sounded like it was acually dragging, making the motor speed slow slightly. Jan.
