Thanks Jerry.

For those of you who don't agree you can watch this instead of reading part 3.

Part 3: A Quickie while waiting...

Okay, so I was in 'waiting' mode while I de-rusted some of the motor components, and
since I have the patience of an Australian field mouse, I decided to quickly move on to something else.

Here's the horn elbow, with an annoying little dent right in the spot where my eyes will ALWAYS
look whenever I'm looking in the direction of this machine.

I used the butt of one of my fancy screwdrivers as an awl and reshaped the dent with my body hammer.

If you're ever going to try something like this there's two things you should concern yourself with.
1. Don't put the screwdriver in the horn opening side of the elbow as you will exert some pressure
on the screwdriver (or whatever tool you use) and warp the opening.
2. These elbows are two halves soldered together, (at least this one was) and if you beat on it too much you
could break the brazing and begin to split the two halves.

But other than that, go get an elbow right now and give it a try while you watch TV!!

and now for some extreme yodeling!!!

Very entertaining and if I can get through the 10 plus hours of Techno Chicken I am sure I will learn a thing or two.

Keep the posts coming - life is too short to not go through it without a smile.

Thanks Bruce, I hope you enjoyed the Chicken Yodeling as well. I fell asleep late last night
after the first 4 hours and had to watch the rest this morning before I left for work. I'm exhausted!

Part 4: The Motor
sorry, I'm running out of catchy titles

Getting this motor running again was quite a challenge.
This is what it looked like before I got my grubby hands on it.

Now as long as this isn't a picture of you.

I saw a few people get up and leave when I did the Stevie Wonder joke

You can probably see that the God of rust has laid down a lot of hate on this motor.
The governor shaft is rusted pretty badly and the moving parts have been seized in place.
Also, you'll notice the governor bushing grub screw's head has broken off (that was a mouthful!).

Here's a quick list of some of the things I needed to make this happen...

1. Drill bits, easy-out, thread tap.

2. more of these

3. a few of these

QUESTION:
How many drill bits does it take to drill through a governor bushing grub screw?

ANSWER:
5. You will break 3 and dull 2

The drill and easy-out method wasn't working, so I drilled the screw all the way to the bushing and then re-threaded the hole. It worked perfectly, but I had to use a brass pan screw that I'll have to address in an upcoming part. Once that was drilled out, I was able to disassemble the governor, sand and polish the shaft, replace the springs, and clean and oil the rest of the motor.

I reassembled everything for a test run.

Here's the reassembled motor with the out-of-place pan head screw (at least it's slotted!)

Here's a video of it working. I had to fine tune it quite a bit to quiet it down,
it's considerably quieter than the diesel tanker engine in my other M

After this, being the sadistic nut-job that I am, I disassembled it again to try and reduce some
of the rust build up.

I let the parts soak in some evapo-rust for a few hours.

It worked really well without removing too much of the patina. If I had left it over night it
may have come out like new, but I was trying to avoid that. It worked really well on the screws,
the heads look nice and clean without looking brand new. I'm going to oil up the bare metal a bit
to protect it and in case this project fails, I can use it to cook my breakfast on.

I'll now be charging $7000 for de-rusting services...

Next up, the case.

I feel bad for all the forum members who are more into music then machines and may not be
entertained during this process, so this time the intermission is for them.

This is a very rare recording, a 'behind the scenes' if you will, of one of the greatest bands of the 80s

Great and entertaining thread. It is so cool to have a machine that needs lots of help, and you bring it back to it's former glory. After you are done, I'm sure that you will be satisfied and fulfilled after this project. Great job and keep us updated.

I am enjoying the restoration... but the yodeling... not so much, but in the spirit of peace and tolerance I decided to post this for Dave.

You guys are great! This made my day! The introduction to Franzl's video was fun, as they all agreed he is the best and will remain so as long as he lives.

I got a good laugh at the $7000 rust removal jab at Rick's Restorations. He likes to say that he prides himself on paying attention to details, yet it is exactly there that he fails! For example, the head badge on a bike was removed ad instead of rivets at original, he used screws. I don't know why I watch that show, but it is like a car accident that you stare at as you drive by... Just can't help it.
