What's the year this Graphophone was made?

Post by Victrolaboy »

Some of you have seen this machine in previous threads I have posted. I already know that production of the early style Graphophone type AT ran from 1898-1903 but I was wondering if anyone knew the approximate year this machine was made based off the serial number. The serial number is 280,191. Thanks in advance

Hazelcorn's book quotes the AT as starting about #201260, and estimates the total production of the first style (of which this is an example) at about 70,000.

Your machine would probably have been produced sometime in 1903, near the end of production.

The one curious detail I note on this machine is the apparent lack of a speed control knob on the bedplate...

It looks like the original speed control thumb screw has been replaced with a contemporary screw with the same thread pitch. It was likely missing so I presume he put this screw in until an original thumb screw can be found. You can see the screw being used after clicking on the picture and clicking the '+' sign to expand the view.

I bought the machine last summer and someone had put a screw in place of the speed control knob before I bought it. I'm going to put the original speed control knob back on but I haven't had time to try to find one lately.
