As a spin-off of BrianU's recent thread, it occurred to me that TMF could provide a great service to our community by establishing a separate category, like Yankee Trader or Tech Support, for names and profiles of individuals across the country who can provide professional repairs on our aging phonographs and talking machines.
This compilation would need to be established by the forum administrator and/or moderators. I think it is a great idea.
It could either be free-form and narrative or, preferably, follow a format recommended by the TMF management. In addition to name, address, phone, e-mail and website (if available), the individuals could list their range of services and specialties. Typical charges for a standard service, e.g. rebuilding an Exhibition reproducer, would be helpful if the individual could supply that type of estimate. Also need to know if they are local pick-up only or are they able to ship items.
Something to think about?

Re: Index of available service and repair
Sounds like a good idea. I do some work for people here in Northwest Indiana, and it comes in handy as I usually go out and check out the machine, take it back after the repairs are made. Some people get leery about shipping machines out for repair.

Re: Index of available service and repair
Don't we already have this structure under "Links" and then "Repairs, Parts, Dealers, Sales, & Auctions"?

Seem as though more names could be added with general geographic locations.

Thanks for the re-direction, George. I would have never thought to look under the "Links" section for this information. I think this is important enough to have its own heading. It also needs to be part of a very fluid process with ongoing additions and updates. For example, the information you directed us to was posted in January 2009! Thanks, again.

I'm surprised by the lack of interest in this suggestion. Any comments from the Administrator or Moderators?

Re: Index of available service and repair
I think the problem with the idea is that once the majority of the known repair agencies are added to this thread,
it will slowly fall off the main page. Two weeks later without using the search feature, someone will create a thread
titled 'Anyone know of a service repair-person in Beulah ND?'
Then gramophone78 will post a reply telling them to use the search function.
Harvey will try to answer the question for them.
and I'll post a ridiculous Gif.
The thread that already exists on the links page has been 'stickied' to remain on the top of the list forever so it's easier access
and always remains visible. I've never tried asking the administrators to add a name to the list, but perhaps this is
what should be done.
OR
We can ask Brandon nicely to open that thread to allow anyone to post a reply to it (if you can't already, I honestly haven't tried).

Re: Index of available service and repair
The Grumpy Guys post was spot on. There is a fine line between a frequently asked question from a new collector and expecting them to use the search feature. I'm sure the majority of us would like to encourage new collectors but it's frustrating to see new threads asking how to clean 78s. Personally, I've used the search feature with mixed results. I can add or modify info on the existing list upon request.
